BMC guides - The Peak District
|
| The
Peak District of England has the finest rock in the world - Gritstone.
Once you have begun to master the complex art that is Gritstone
climbing you will find that you are satisfied with little else.
Although Gritstone climbs are quite small and elegant, they can
also be very nasty. As it says in one of the guidebooks to the area,
the 'E' grading system, when applied to Gritstone does not mean
'extreme' - it stands for 'extermination'. Treat these Gritstone
climbs with respect. Remember, it is God's own rock. |

The
Lake District
|
| The
Lake District is one of England's best climbing areas, although
the crags can often have huge walk ins. Crafty climbers can avoid
the boring walk at one crag by rowing in! |

Scotland
|
| Scotland
would be the UK's finest climbing area, were it not for the weather,
the midges and the distance from civilisation (only joking). Lochnagar,
one of the finest cliffs, has the distinction of being owned by
the Queen, fortunately, she lets other people climb there too... |

Wales
and the West of England
|
| Wales
is the nearest decent big cliff climbing to the most populated parts
of England. The best crag is of course the awesome Clogwyn D'ur
Arddu - the cliff of King Arthur who is reputed by legend to be
asleep in a cave in the cliff. How he can possibly sleep surrounded
by all that great climbing is a complete mystery. |
